London Sustainable Materials Lab
The London Sustainable Materials Lab (LSML) is a research facility based at the University of East London for low-carbon and circular materials innovation. We support industry, designers, and SMEs through applied research, advanced material characterisation, and performance testing to bring early-stage ideas to real-world deployment.
MARINATEX.
MARINATEX. Born out of a passion for clean seas, MarinaTex is a multi-award-winning materials science company pioneering 100% plastic-free, compostable materials derived from seafood waste. Our innovative products serve as sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics, supporting the transition to a circular economy across packaging and agriculture.
Marks & Clerk
Marks & Clerk is a leading intellectual property firm providing advice to clients on all aspects of IP. Innovation is the life-blood of business and we help you navigate the complexities of patents, trademarks, registered designs and copyright. From the capture of an idea, to the enforcement and defence of rights, Marks & Clerk is your expert partner to ensure your IP is protected and fully exploited.
MATEROIM
MATEROIM’S mission is to accelerate the research, development, and uptake of materials that have a net-positive impact on people and the planet. Our collaborative platform accelerates new materials innovation through open data and AI, while our research team supports the development and scaling of these materials and their value chains. We convene an extensive network from across the materials sector, including scientists, commercial material developers, consumer brands, retailers, recyclers, and composters.
Metisium
Metisium supports early stage sustainable materials businesses in turning technology into scalable commercial value. We help teams identify high value market opportunities, sharpen product and platform strategies, and build strong organisational capabilities. Its network unlocks partnerships and co-development routes, while its execution framework ensures rapid progress through disciplined prioritisation, a focus on quality, and continuous learning.
MiAlgae
MiAlgae uses by-products from the Scottish whisky industry to grow microalgae rich in omega-3 oils, providing a sustainable alternative to fish oil. By upcycling industrial by-products, MiAlgae reduces waste, lowers reliance on wild-caught fish, and supports a circular bioeconomy. Our innovative process combines biotechnology and resource efficiency to produce high-quality algal ingredients with minimal environmental impact. Based in Scotland, MiAlgae works with partners across the biotech sector to deliver scalable, traceable, and responsible solutions that help build a more sustainable future for bio-based production.
Naion
Naion is a circular economy specialist applying systems thinking to the production of sustainable chemicals, materials, polymers and plastics. We help supply-chains to pollute less and reduce their reliance on fossil-oil and gas by transforming waste and biomass into high-value products. We work with leading solution partners, manufacturers and regional authorities to develop and deploy novel technologies and regional systems that minimise carbon emissions. We do this by maximising the biogenic and recycled content in manufactured products. Naion’s circular supply-chain model helps to remove barriers to circularity. It addresses policy and economic challenges and strengthens supply security, resilience and long-term supply-chain sustainability.
National Physical Laboratory
National Physical Laboratory, NPL is ideally positioned to support delivery of the multi-disciplinary requirements of companies working across Bio-based industry. Advances in biotechnologies such as Engineering Biology will be driven through collaboration built on a foundation of reliable, repeatable and comparable measurement systems which are easily transferred between manufacturers in the same way that metrology is critical in other advanced manufacturing disciplines from aircraft to semiconductors. NPL is helping accelerate innovation and scale-up of Bio driven technologies through the development of physical reference materials, standardised analytical methodologies, internationally recognised standards and the development of best practice guides.
NATUREWORKS
NATUREWORKS is an independent company invested in by Cargill and PTT Global Chemical, offering a family of commercially available biopolymers derived from 100 percent annually renewable resources with cost and performance that compete with petroleum-based packaging materials and fibres. The company apply its unique technology to the processing of natural plant sugars to create the proprietary polylactide polymer marketed under the Ingeo brand name. NatureWorks represents one of the largest efforts ever in green chemistry and biorefinery.
NCIMB
NCIMB is a biotechnology company with a unique asset: a collection comprising thousands of bacterial strains, many of which are commercially proven for industrial biotechnology applications including production of chemicals, proteins and enzymes. The microbes within this collection are a vital industrial resource that sits at the heart of many of the industrial biotech processes essential for the development of a circular biobased economy. NCIMB licenses strains for commercial use, takes part in collaborative research projects and offers a range of microbiology services as well as undertaking its own internal research to develop and commercialise this microbial platform.
