Aston Institute for Membrane Excellence (AIME) is a unique, interdisciplinary, intersectoral research and training hub for translational membrane science. AIME is supported by the Research England (RE) Expanding Excellence in England (E3) Programme. Our Research England Expanding Excellence in England (E3) award provides £10 million to synergistically combine world-leading expertise in membrane biology and novel polymer chemistries to establish a first-of-its-kind institute, expanding our distinctive excellence in computational membrane science, membrane structural determination and sustainable polymers research. No other institute in the global research and innovation landscape has the platform, potential or promise for major breakthroughs that AIME heralds.

BIO BASE EUROPE PILOT PLANT is an independent, state-of-the-art facility that operates from a laboratory level to a multi-ton scale. Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is a service provider for process development, scale-up and custom manufacturing of biobased products and processes. A wide and flexible spectrum of modular unit operations combined with the experience of our highly competent engineers and technicians enables us to translate your biobased lab protocol into a viable industrial process. Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant enables the conversion of renewable feedstocks into biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuels and other bioproducts by using technologies such as biomass pretreatment, biocatalysis, (gas)fermentation, green chemistry and product recovery and purification.

BIOME BIOPLASTICS is a leading UK-based developer of bioplastics. Serving a global customer base from its headquarters in Southampton, the company’s mission is to produce materials to challenge the dominance of oil-based polymers. The main focus is on the development of novel bio-based and biodegradable hetero-aromatic polyesters for a variety of end-uses. Over the last four years Biome and its partners have invested over US$7 million in research and development funding. Now proven robustly at laboratory scale and with appropriate patents filings, the next challenge is to scale up for a pilot on the path to commercial production. Meanwhile, other work continues to expand the range of feedstocks, broaden the pathways used and refine the products offered our customers.
