A new report from WRAP suggests that local authorities that provide separate food waste collections experience lower total food waste arisings in their area.

The report, entitled ‘The impact of food waste collection on household waste arisings’, compared data collected from 107 local authorities from England over a five-year period between 2012/13 and 2016/17.

The report found that local authorities with separate food waste collections produced an average of 16.1 kilogrammes per household per year less waste than those without.

Factors that impacted on whether a local authority offered separate food waste collections included nation, rurality, residual waste collection frequency and affluence.
