It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Ecospray Chief Executive and BBIA Board director Philip Charlton Smith, who died on Tuesday (24 March) after a long battle with lung cancer.

Robert Lidstone, Sales Director at Ecospray, provided this message: “It is with great sadness that we write to tell you that our Chief Executive, Philip Charlton Smith passed away on Tuesday 24 March.

“Some of you may have been aware that Philip had been suffering poor health for some time. This eventually expressed itself as lung cancer some 15 months ago and sadly, despite an operation to remove the offending tumour, it returned with a vengeance in the last month or so.

“However, those of you who knew Philip well will not be surprised to learn that we all have our instructions! That is to build Ecospray into a world-class company and we fully intend to do just that.

“So our business carries on with the support of our customers, suppliers and shareholders as we continue to develop sustainable crop protection solutions and your forbearance at this difficult time is much appreciated.”

BBIA Managing Director David Newman also shared the following message: “Philip had become a friend of mine over the five years I had the pleasure and honour to know him. We met regularly in London and he helped me a lot in understanding his business and how the association could be more effective.

He was an active Board member of BBIA until he became ill in 2018. On behalf of all the BBIA Board and those members who knew Philip, I want to say how saddened we are by his passing and send our condolences to his family. Philip, we will miss you.”
