What are the Demeter Awards?
Demeter is the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture, presiding over crops, grains, food, and the fertility of the earth.
The Demeter Awards are the only set of awards designed specifically to celebrate, support and promote excellence in the bio-based sector in the UK.
Applicants who are short-listed for awards will pitch their products to the judging panel at the Demeter Innovation Showcase Event, with winners being announced on the day.

Award ceremony 2pm-6pm, ‘Bowled over by Bio’ 6pm-11pm
Not only will this year’s BBIA Demeter Awards see the usual wonderful line up of award pitches, panels and networking, but it will also be followed by an evening of fun, being ‘bowled over by bio’ as we take to the private bowling alley below Victoria House for some friendly team bowling, food, drinks and karaoke!
What are the Award categories?
- BBIA Breakthrough Innovation Award – Awarded to the organisation that has developed a truly novel bio-based chemical or material, demonstrating significant technical innovation and potential to transform the sector.
- BBIA Commercial Success Award – Proven market impact and adoption, recognising a company that has successfully brought a bio-based product or process to market at scale.
- BBIA Climate Impact Award – Recognising measurable carbon reduction or wider climate benefits delivered through bio-based chemicals or materials.
- BBIA Organisation of the Year Award – The winner of this Award will be, in the view of the judges, the most outstanding BBIA member company – demonstrating growth of its business and a sustained contribution to the UK economy.
- BBIA Bioeconomy Champion Award** – Awarded to an individual that has made an outstanding contribution to advancing the UK bioeconomy through leadership, advocacy, or collaboration across the sector.
- BBIA Future Leader Award** – Recognising an outstanding Recognises an early career person demonstrating leadership and communication skills in the bio-based industry.
Judges will be looking for evidence of how nominees have made significant contributions not only support economic growth but also foster environmental sustainability and social well-being. This award celebrates pioneers whose work inspires change, accelerates the transition to a bio-based economy, and paves the way for a more sustainable world.
*For the Breakthrough Innovation Award, Commercial Success Award and Climate Impact Award, up to 6 organisations will be shortlisted per award category, with one overarching winner per category, and two runners up, decided by the judging panel on the day after hearing the pitches.
**For the Organisation of the Year Award, Bioeconomy Champion Award and the Future Leader Award, there will be one overall winner, decided by the judging panel in advance of the event.
Reasons to apply for an award and prizes
The Demeter Awards will carry substantial kudos, specifically due to the totally independent, high-quality judging and breadth of support from the key leading participants in the sector. To apply for one of the Demeter Awards, please first read the criteria and eligibility document, and then complete the online application form – HERE.
Deadline for applications to be submitted is 30th October 2026, 12 noon.
