UK supermarket Co-op announced in October that it would be offering new compostable bags at more than 1,000 of its stores nationwide in a bid to cut single-use plastics use.
The retailer has joined forces with BBIA member Novamont to use the Italian company’s Mater-Bi bioplastic in the plastic bags given out by the supermarket.
However, Co-op can only roll out the bags in stores based in English and Scottish local authorities that provide separate food waste collections, as the compostable bags must be dealt with in appropriate composting facilities.
