Austria to ban sale of plastic bags from 2021

Austria’s National Council passed a law on 2 July banning the sale of plastic bags as of 2021. Biodegradable plastic bags made from sustainable raw materials are exempted, as well as the ultra-thin bags used to bag fruits and vegetables in supermarkets – as long as they are compostable. Former Austrian Environment Minister Elisabeth Köstinger, who drafted the law in 2018, cheerfully tweeted on Tuesday: “The ban on plastic bags is coming!… This will save up to 7,000 tons of plastic and it’s an important victory in the fight against a throwaway mentality.”
