A wood-based fibre ready meal tray suitable for home composting has won the Bio-based Material of the Year 2020 award.

Made by Huhtamaki Lurgan from the UK and Finland, the product beat off competition from a self-adhesive tape consisting of 90 per cent raw materials made by monta Klebebandwerk (Germany) in second place and a compostable functional barrier coating for food packaging, comestics and pharmaceuticals from Franhofer ISC (Germany) in third place.

The award was announced by nova-Institute at the 13th International Conference on Bio-based Materials, which was held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Six companies out of 17 applications were previously nominated by an expert jury and the nominees brought their innovative ideas via screen to conference attendees’ homes. After the presentations of the six nominees, the winners were elected by the audience in an online poll and awarded with their prize, sponsored by YNCORIS Industrial Services (Germany).
