From British discovery to British industry

Britain is a world leader in scientific discovery, engineering biology and industrial biotechnology. But too often, the technologies we invent and develop here are scaled, manufactured and commercialised elsewhere.

Made by British Bio is a BBIA led industry-led initiative to change that.

Our ambition is simple: to make Britain the best place in the world to develop, scale and manufacture the next generation of bio-based products.

From chemicals, cosmetics and cleaning products to packaging, textiles, food ingredients and construction materials, biotechnology offers an opportunity to transform how everyday products are made.

By harnessing biology, renewable carbon and British manufacturing expertise, we can reduce dependence on fossil-derived resources, strengthen domestic supply chains, create skilled jobs and deliver measurable environmental benefits.

We have invested in the science. Now we need to capture the manufacturing.

The Opportunity: A £500 Billion UK Bioeconomy

The UK already has a substantial bioeconomy, spanning agriculture, manufacturing, chemicals, biotechnology, food, materials and many other sectors.

  • £325 billion – estimated annual contribution of the UK bioeconomy to gross value added (GVA).
  • 6.4 million – jobs supported by the UK bioeconomy.
  • £500 billion – potential annual GVA contribution by 2030 with the right investment, industrial strategy and policy support.

Yet despite our scientific strengths, Britain ranks just 21st out of 28 European countries for bioeconomy growth.

We have the research excellence, industrial capabilities, agricultural resources, manufacturing clusters and financial expertise to become a global leader in biomanufacturing.

What we need now is a coordinated national effort to turn that potential into industrial success.

This is an opportunity for the whole United Kingdom – every nation, every region and every postcode.

From rural communities supplying sustainable biomass to industrial clusters developing advanced biomanufacturing capabilities, the bioeconomy can revitalise British industry, strengthen economic resilience and create new opportunities across the country.

Our Ambition: Seed. Scale. Stay.

Made by British Bio is built around three simple priorities.

SEED IN BRITAIN

Turn British scientific excellence into investable technologies and businesses.

Support the translation of world-leading research in engineering biology, industrial biotechnology and sustainable chemistry into commercially viable technologies, ingredients, materials and products.

SCALE IN BRITAIN

Give British innovations the infrastructure, investment and markets they need to grow.

Enable access to pilot facilities, demonstration plants, first-of-a-kind manufacturing, skills, finance and regulatory support so that businesses can move from laboratory discovery to competitive commercial production.

STAY IN BRITAIN

Make Britain the place where bio-based businesses choose to manufacture and grow.

Create the long-term industrial, regulatory and market conditions that encourage businesses to invest, establish manufacturing operations, build supply chains and create jobs here in the UK.

Our goal is not simply to invent the next generation of technologies. It is to manufacture them, export them and capture their economic value in Britain.

Making It Real: Made by British Bio Demonstrators

Made by British Bio is about more than policy and ambition.

We want to demonstrate what becomes possible when British science, biotechnology, feedstocks, ingredients, materials, manufacturers and brands work together.

Through practical, industry-led demonstrator projects, we aim to develop commercially competitive products that showcase the capabilities of the UK bioeconomy and identify the opportunities and barriers to manufacturing them at scale in Britain.

Our demonstrators will connect organisations across the value chain, from biological feedstocks through to finished consumer products.

They will help us understand:

  • What can already be made using British biotechnology and manufacturing capabilities?
  • Where are the gaps in our domestic supply chains?
  • How can we improve performance, reduce costs and achieve commercial competitiveness?
  • What infrastructure, investment and regulatory support is needed to scale?
  • How can we demonstrate credible, measurable sustainability benefits?
  • How do we ensure that more of the economic value stays in Britain?

Our Five Product Development Principles

Our Made by British Bio demonstrators are guided by five principles, ensuring that innovation is matched by commercial credibility, scientific evidence and environmental responsibility.

Maximise Bio-based Content

Design products with the highest technically and commercially feasible proportion of bio-based ingredients and materials, supported by measurable and verifiable evidence.

Prioritise British Ingredients and Manufacturing

Maximise UK-developed, UK-sourced and UK-manufactured ingredients, materials and packaging wherever feasible, building transparent, resilient supply chains and identifying opportunities to develop missing capabilities.

Deliver Exceptional Performance, Safety and Compliance

Ensure that products meet or exceed conventional alternatives in quality, functionality, safety, stability and consumer experience, with regulatory requirements integrated from the outset.

Build a Credible Pathway to Commercial Viability

Develop products that consumers want to buy at a price they are willing to pay, identifying the technology improvements, scale and investment required to achieve competitive production costs.

Demonstrate Lifecycle Sustainability, Transparency and Traceability

Assess environmental performance across the entire product lifecycle, including greenhouse-gas emissions, energy, water, land use, biodiversity, circularity and end-of-life impacts.

Support claims about sustainability, bio-based content and British origin with robust, transparent and verifiable evidence.
