You will have read that in Nairobi, the United Nations Environment Programme annual assembly voted unanimously to initiate the negotiation on a global treaty on managing plastics production and waste. By 2024, the parties should bring a binding treaty proposal for approval.
This is a gigantic first step on the way to reducing plastic pollution and creating producer responsibility mechanisms across the globe. Compliments to all those involved who lobbied for this outcome. The road towards a final, meaningful treaty is long and bumpy but the trajectory is now much more positive.
