The European Commission last week (26 September) held the Reinventing Plastics: Closing the Circle conference to explore issues and potential solutions to be proposed in the Commission’s upcoming plastics strategy.

This strategy intends to support and complement the existing acquis and tackle the interrelated problems of fossil feedstock dependence, recycling and reuse and plastics leakage into the environment. The strategy is being informed by a number of technical studies and a wide variety of stakeholder engagement activities.

The conference welcomed high level speakers from across Europe. Of particular interest, perhaps, is the third topic of the afternoon session: ‘Bio-based plastics and biodegradable plastics: sustainable solutions?’, which included Catia Bastioli, CEO of BBIA member Novamont.

Every session of the conference can be watched online on the European Commission’s website.
