The role of biodegradable materials and products in the open/uncontrolled environments

Paul Mines, Chair BBIA, CEO Biome Bioplastics

Years of extensive use of conventional plastics have led to the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment, contributing to the Anthropocene pressure on ecosystems. Is the deliberate manufacture and marketing of biodegradable materials a licence to litter/flush or a pragmatic response to minimise damage to our soils and water courses.

The talk will explore the significance of biodegradable materials and products in mitigating environmental impact, particularly in open and uncontrolled environments. The focus will be on understanding the lifecycle, benefits, and challenges associated with biodegradable solutions in various settings where waste management infrastructure is limited, non-existent or just not an option.

We will examine the applications and benefits of biodegradable products using examples. These include their use in agriculture, such as mulch films and seedling pots, in packaging, such as biodegradable plastics and paper products, their uses in the marine environments such as greases and fishing equipment and their use in consumer goods.

The advantages of biodegradable materials over traditional plastics will be discussed, highlighting their potential for reduced carbon footprint, minimized persistent residues, and compatibility with natural cycles.

The regulatory and standards framework governing biodegradable materials will be overviewed, emphasizing the importance of certification and labelling for consumer awareness and industry compliance.

The discussion will also discuss areas where standards and labelling are at a formative stage. The talk will underscore the importance of integrating biodegradable materials into everyday use in a considered manner to create a more sustainable.

Audience engagement through Q&A will be encouraged to address specific concerns and promote further discussion on the topic.
