Purpose: Please join the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) and the Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum (IBLF), with support from Innovate UK, at Caxton House, Monday September 9th where we aim to create the foundations of a funding ‘Grand Challenge’ for the bio-based sector, which we will use to engage Government to campaign for dedicated funding and support for the sector, with associated Road Map.
We will also share with you a draft bio-based materials and products communications plan, which we hope stakeholders can help us finesse, to have a coordinated approach across as many organisations as possible, in delivering in the campaign in September and October to raise the profile of the sector.
Remit: Bio-based sector includes bio-based, biodegradable and compostable chemicals, materials and products (BB-materials).
Background: In June 2018 the IBLF published ‘A National Industrial Biotechnology Strategy to 2030’, closely followed by the UK Government publishing it’s Bioeconomy Strategy (now withdrawn). Whilst these documents provided a great basis for the bio-based sector to begin to grow, they are now outdated, and there is a need to create a new vision for the sector to be shared with the UK Government.
In addition, the BBIA recently received funding from Innovate UK for a 6-month discovery phase for a Bio-Based and biodegradable materials regulatory science network (BB-REG-NET), which has identified the key barriers for the commercialisation of BB-materials. Now is the time for the sector to come together and jointly determine how to overcome these challenges.
