BBIA Chairman Andy Sweetman has joined MPs and academics in signing a letter calling for ambitious targets to increase the uptake of compostable alternatives to conventional plastics.

The letter underlines the current lack of recycling of plastic film and flexible packaging in the UK – currently just four per cent – and calls for a shift to compostable packaging that can be returned to earth and avoiding the pitfalls for packaging in the mechanical recycling stream.

The signatories call for improved education and the right waste management infrastructure to allow compostable packaging to replace a significant proportion of non-recyclable conventional flexible plastic, especially since by 2023 the UK may have nationwide organics waste collection coverage that would greatly aid the recovery of compostable plastics.
